A felt canvas, as long and as wide as the stage, descends over the pianist, who imperturbably interprets his 'melody'. The felt appears and is slowly forming a sculpture that takes on imperceptibly different forms. Sometimes it looks like an appearing or disappearing mountain landscape, sometimes it transforms into an abstract sculpture that slowly but surely threatens to suffocate the pianist.
The EARTH series within the cycle is used to explore and depict current compelling themes. In EARTH I, Van Welden, together with pianist/composer Frederik Croene, takes climate change as a starting point.

Een vilten doek, zo lang en zo breed als het podium, daalt neer over de pianist, die onverstoorbaar zijn 'melodie' vertolkt. Het vilt verschijnt en vormt langzaam een sculptuur die onmerkbaar verschillende vormen aanneemt. Soms lijkt het op een opduikend of verdwijnend berglandschap, soms transformeert het in een abstracte sculptuur die de pianist langzaam maar zeker dreigt te verstikken.
De serie EARTH binnen de cyclus Verenigde Planeten wordt gebruikt om actuele dwingende thema's te verkennen en te verbeelden. In EARTH I neemt Van Welden samen met pianist/componist Frederik Croene de klimaatverandering als uitgangspunt.
