SATURN III is a performance/installation in Karl van Welden’s SATURN-series, focusing on themes such as distance, intimacy, infinity, control and power in relation to the contemporary landscape. The site-specific project SATURN III - townscape explores the shaping powers of the transitional area between natural landscape and cityscape, where cultivated nature and scattered housing determine each other.
A circle of monolithically shaped observation points stands in a landscape or on a high building. A panoptical setup which offers a view on its wide surroundings. As a spectator you take place in each observational post individually, zooming in on details in the natural panorama. The lens guides your gaze to the intimacy of isolated figures in the distance. In an atmosphere of melancholy and vague menace they attempt to inscribe themselves in world and time though small gestures.
The rural landscape as a mediator between human-size actions and cosmic dimensions. Visitors determine their own time; the performers keep on playing without interruption.

SATURN III is een performance/installatie in Karl van Welden’s SATURN-reeks, die zich toespitst op thema’s als afstand, intimiteit, oneindigheid, controle en macht in relatie tot het hedendaagse landschap. Het in situ project SATURN III - townscape exploreert de beeldkracht van het overgangsgebied tussen een natuurlandschap en een stadslandschap, waar gecultiveerde natuur en verspreide bebouwing elkaar wederzijds bepalen.
Op een hoog gebouw of in het landschap staat een cirkel van monolithisch ogende observatiepunten. Een panoptische opstelling die uitzicht biedt op de weidse omgeving. Als toeschouwer neem je individueel plaats in de observatieposten, die inzoomen op details in een gediversifieerd panorama. De lens gidst je blik naar de intimiteit van geïsoleerde figuren in de verte. In een atmosfeer van melancholie en vage dreiging trachten ze zich via kleine handelingen in te schrijven in de wereld en de tijd.
Het landschap als bemiddelaar tussen handelingen op mensenmaat en kosmische dimensies. De bezoeker bepaalt zijn eigen tijd, de performers spelen onafgebroken door.
